How to get the most out of your caffeine


Contrary to popular belief, coffee is actually not best beverage choice to consume as soon as you wake up in the morning. Waiting an hour between the time you wake up and the time you have your first coffee will increase its effectiveness.

It all comes to down to science. Our level of alertness peaks during different points of the day, based on our cortisol activity (cortisol is a steroid hormone that our body releases) and this usually happens in the morning between 8 am and 9 am.

Most of us believed that drinking coffee around this time would boost its effects, but we were wrong! According to scientists, research shows that consuming coffee during peak cortisol production greatly diminishes the caffeine’s effects and actually builds up a greater tolerance in the long run.

Message to the night owls: Cortisol levels increase as soon as you wake up, regardless of the time. So even if you go to bed really late, and therefore wake up late the next day, they still recommend waiting an hour before having your first cup.
